YAMA & Hotchicks Dancer Team

As Kpop lover, sometimes I got my attention for a group whose behind the idol. They are not only as a group whom helps the idols but also they were behind idols successed. One of them is YAMA & Hotchicks!

YAMA & Hotchicks is actually one group but they separated as guy and girl group. YAMA for the guy backup dancer and Hotchicks for the girl. If I’m not wrong, in Japan YAMA & Hotchicks also made a dance group to teach a dance under the name URIZIP. I noticed YAMA & Hotchicks since around 2011 after watching Roly Poly dance practice. One of their dancer got my attention. I don’t know why but he’s into me lol. The one who always in front of camera with black t-shirt also denim in other day. He’s Park Chang Ho. Did you notice him too?

After watching the video, I had noticed them in many stages, MV and dance practices. Then, “Ah, they must be popular.”. I found about YAMA & Hotchicks after got Park Chang Ho’s twitter and learn about them. They are my favorite backup dancer in Kpop industry. For me, they have unique side and character.

  2. Hello, it’s a truly helpful post I’ve been looking for. Thank you for posting it ^^ currently I want to dig in more about kpop backup dancers’ world for a reference material of my story and I have some questions I would like to ask you about backup dancers, please kindly answer if you know the answers since I’ll be looking forward to it 🙂

    1. I see that YAMA & Hotchicks aren’t bound to a particular entertainment company [they’re working with T-Ara and SPY who are under different companies], does all of the backup dancers just like them? Or are there something called backup dancers ‘groups’ that is bound to only one company? [Like if they’re working with SM and they can’t work with the other company outside SM] Or not?

    2. Do they also have to sign some kind of contract to a particular company/group they’re going to work with, or not? [I asked that question because I saw that most of YAMA & Hotchicks videos are with T-Ara, Brown Eyed Girls and such, I mean they’re not just doing it with everyone although there are also some kpop groups who showed up only once]

    3. Can a highschool student also be a backup dancers? [Like if they’re attending a school of art or something, or is it okay even if they don’t?]

    4. Are they formed by their own will [gathering the members by themselves] or are they formed by some backup dancers company/? [if there are ones]

    5. If a thing like backup dancers company exists, do they need to join an audition to be accepted as a member or no?

Yup, that’s all my questions. My deepest thanks for reading it and I’ll be very glad if you reply my comment [I wish you’re still active and seeing the comments though…it’s been 1 year since the article posted so I kinda worried :p]

    1. Hello, sorry for late reply.

Well, actually I’m not really know about backup dancers. I only collected some informations about YAMA&HOTCHICKS since I’m a fan of them. I will answer your questions based on my observations but it’s not 100% true.

      1. From what I observed about backup dancers, I think YES. MOST OF THEM have their own name which means they are not owned by an entertainment company. I think a company will have a contract with a backup dancers for their idols for their promotions or concerts. However, a company seems comfortable or satisfied with its backup dancers, so they’re working with the same backup dancers as before. Let say SM and YG, they seem have the same backup dancers for long period. While YAMA & Hotchicks will only appear in T-ARA (for example) promotion period, concert or special performance. It means they seem have a contract.
I think I never seen other backup dancers from SM and YG work with the other company outside them. I don’t know about JYP.

2.Yes, I think they have a contract. As I mentioned on point 1, they have a contract for their promotion period, concert or special performance. A backup dancer also makes a choreo for the idol and also appear on the MV. YAMA & Hotchicks make a choreo for some artists from some companies. While YG & SM backup dancers, I think they only have a contract with them for now. They make choreo for the idols and sometimes transfered a choreo from a choreographer outside Korea for the idol.
I have seen one or two YAMA backup dancer joined SM concert and SNSD promotion along with SM backup dancer. I don’t get any info about this which means they are just a part of YAMA or a freelancer while SM needs it.

      3. I don’t know about this actually but I think a high schooler is not allowed to work as a backup dancer.
I think they only need your skill of dance, so it’s okay even if you are not attending a school of art or something related.

      4. I think most of entertainment company’s backup dancers are formed by backup dancer companies.

      5. Yes, I think so. However, I don’t know where to get the info about the audition. Maybe you need to email them for the details.

I hope this will help you.
